Kingdom Connect

Kingdom Connect is a startup that aims to provide a space for the Christian community to find and provide volunteer and work opportunities. Our team’s task was to create a visually compelling landing page and a seamless onboarding process.

The Challenge

To phrase this part of this project as a ‘problem’ would not be an accurate description seeing as no research was conducted. Rather, I would call this a ‘challenge’ that can be articulated with a question: how might we create a welcoming landing page with a strong call to action, and an onboarding process that does not frustrate users?

The Solution

The solution in this case is obviously to create the pages the client asked for - a landing page and an onboarding experience. But how can we deliver the best versions of these? By learning from our competitors, figuring out what works/doesn’t work with our current design, and implementing changes based on feedback.

Understand

To fully understand the challenge, our team conducted an analysis of 4 competitors and an audit of the current high fidelity screens provided by the client. A competitive analysis helps us figure out what the rest of the industry is doing. We did not want to stray from the standard procedure. An initial audit of current screens can help us discover what needs improvement.

Ideate

Users need to be notified of any activity related to their profile.

During a brainstorming session with my teammate Christina, we realized there was no way for the user for know whether a friend request has been accepted, or a job they applied for has been sent through.

We thought a notification page could remedy this and after running it by the hosts, I started sketching potential solutions while Christina worked on the onboarding process.

Asking clients follow up questions.

We realized we had a few questions for the hosts about halfway through the project. So we made a list of questions we had and had a quick discussion with them. The main things we were asked to focus on was the onboarding process, the landing page, and the notification page. I went straight to a high fidelity design of the notification feature, and Christina created low fidelity screens of the onboarding process.

Design

After presenting our wireframe and wireflow to the clients, we made minor adjustments and created high fidelity screens that improve on the initial screens we received.

Feedback & Iterations

While the client was happy with the changes we made to the job board and notifications page, they had some suggestions for the landing page design we came up with. They wanted us to to have images or illustrations smaller, rather than taking up the whole width of the page and include space for a quote as well. We created 2 options for them to choose from, and they ultimately decided on the first option.

Measuring Impact

The clients did not want to conduct any research for this portion of the project, so we did not measure impact. However in a hypothetical situation we would conduct a usability test and ask users to perform the following tasks:

  • Sign up for an account

  • Navigate to notifications

  • Search for a job and apply

  • Search for a user and connect with them

Final Thoughts

Have a goal and deliverable determined from the beginning of the project. Even if it may change over time, having a solid objective from the initial stage can help the process and create less confusion.

Take criticisms constructively, not personally. You are creating this for someone else, so at the end of the day, you have to deliver what they want. We went through a few iterations of our landing page and I learned not to take their comments to heart.

Rationalizing your decisions. A client may ask you what the purpose of a certain feature is and you have to be able to give a clear and concise reason. It is a good idea to use everyday language rather than complicated UX jargon.

Next Steps

If I were to continue on this project, I would focus on these 3 goals:

  1. Experience of the job application process

  2. Visual design of the profile page

  3. VIsual design and copy of the landing page

My next steps would be researching products and services inside and outside of the industry, have a quick ideation session by sketching screns or a Crazy 8’s, and find a way to improve copy by speaking to the client to better understand the company’s values and story.
